Sarah’s Key is based on a particular incident during the Holocaust, the Vel’ d’Hiv’, the round up of Jewish citizens in Paris on July 16 and 17, 1942. The story concerns the round-up of a French family and an investigation into that incident years later. The story weaves through past and present.
Sarah’s Story: Sarah Starzynsky’s family is caught in the round up of Vel’ d’ Hiv’, in Paris on July 16th 1942. To save her younger brother, Michal, from the Nazis, Sarah locks him in a cabinet. Weeks later, Sarah manages to escape from the camp, and with the help of an elderly couple, makes her way back to the apartment.
Present Day:
Julia Jarmond, an American living in France is unhappily married to Bertrand Tezac. Julia, a reporter, is asked to write a story on the round up of Vel’ d’ Hiv’.
