Daphne Du Maurier, Lady Browning, published two famous novels, “Rebecca” and “Jamaica Inn”.  The author lived in England, was born in 1907 and died in 1989.

 

Mysterious and fast paced, the novel centers on the young Mrs. De Winter’s and her older husband, Maxim de Winter, who harbors many secrets.  After their recent marriage, the newlywed couple returns to Manderley, Maxim’s home.  As the young Mrs. de Winter’s attempts to make the mansion her home she is continually blocked by Mrs. Danvers, the housekeeper.

The young Mrs. De Winters quickly realizes she is unwelcomed, and learns from the housekeeper, that Rebecca, Maxim's first wife, was and is Maxim’s only love.

It is only after Mrs. De Winters finally confronts her husband that she begins to learn the truth, as Maxim reveals his story.
