THE BOOK FAIR

A novel of war during the siege of Leningrad, the story doubles as a character study.  Historically informative, interesting, and full of quick wit, the novel is also gratuitously violent and often crude.  However, the likeable characters coupled with the realistic depictions of a nightmarish and often absurd world, offer an intensity that shines rare and bold.

Worth reading.
