Author James Fenimore Cooper spent time as a both a merchant marine and later, as a midshipman in the U.S.  Navy.   Cooper was also illegally impressed into the British Royal Navy.  Cooper’s father served as a Congressman and his daughter later wrote on the Suffrage movement.  Born in New Jersey, in 1789, the author died in 1851, in New York.

 

James Fenimore Cooper’s classic novel takes place in upstate New York, during the French and Indian Wars.  The story, beautifully descriptive, full of drama and action, unfolds in slow motion as British soldiers and three Mohicans battle the Hurons in effort to transport Colonel Munroe’s daughters, Cora and Alice, to the safety of the fort he commands.
