Review:

Spencer Quinn’s action, suspense novel, “Dog On It”,  features Chet, the loveable black and white canine.  Chet works cases with Bernie Little, a former policeman, turned private eye.  Chet loves solving cases with Bernie, but more that, he loves Bernie who he will do anything for.

One evening, a stranger, Cynthia Chambliss shows up at Bernie’s house.  Cynthia explains her daughter is missing.  Bernie reluctantly agrees to investigate explaining that Madison has only been missing for a few hours.  However, after checking her room, he suspects something, not quite right.  Moments later, Madison arrives home unharmed.  What interests Bernie, is the obvious lie Madison tells her mother.

As Bernie ponders the case, he deals with Leda, his angry ex-wife, for whom he does nothing right.

Suzie Sanchez, a reporter writing an article on Bernie, visits.  Chet likes Suzie, especially the treats she brings him.

Well written; non-stop action.  Chet, though a top dog investigator, cannot help but chase his own dreams.  Recommended!

Review:

Warm winds, green leafy Palm trees, Bernie Little together with Chet, his happy canine pal, work a stakeout. Chet, sitting shotgun in the Porsche, keeps an eager eye on the hotel while Bernie steals a catnap.  A variety of odors and intriguing smells fill Chet’s senses triggering happy memories and experiences with Bernie, his best friend in the whole wide world.  A quick growl from Chet and Bernie quickly awakens and snaps the photos of the perp.  For a bonus payment from his client, Bernie receives tickets to the circus.

On a visit to the circus, Chet and Bernie are surprisingly pulled into the case of a cruelly treated, missing circus performer and animal trainer.

Chet’s natural impulses, his devotion to Bernie, the understanding of his job and the interpretation of the world around him offers an uncanny insight into the relationship between dog and man.   Recommended!

The story’s heroine, a physically and emotionally injured soldier who barely survived her fourth tour in Afghanistan, struggles with PTSD, memory loss, survivors guilt, war zone flashbacks and, has great difficulty fitting into normal social settings.  The fast-paced mystery novel parts way from the Chet and Bernie series.  The novel adapts a serious tone with details of soldiers’ strife, the managing of PTSD and descriptive military maneuvers.

After an emotional upset, the young female soldier suddenly decides to abandon military life.  On the spontaneous road trip, the soldier, LeAnne, unexpectedly acquires a large, stray dog.  LeAnne, together with the smart but snarly, Goody, begin to investigate the kidnapping of a fellow soldier’s child.

The novel offers a view into the complexity of military life and a glimpse into the difficulties wounded soldiers endure.  Although a few lines in the book resemble the work of Spencer Quinn, the novel more resembles books by Peter Abrahams, the two authors being one in the same.  Goody earns her place among dog lovers.
