Review:

John Steinbeck, winner of the Novel Prize in Literature in 1962, was one of the most popular American authors. John Steinbeck published many bestselling novels including “The Grapes of Wrath” which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1969, and novellas such as “The Red Pony” and “Of Mice and Men.”   Steinbeck largely wrote about the Salinas Valley where he lived.  Born in 1902, John Steinbeck died in 1968.

Steinbeck’s novella depicts two migrant farm workers, George Milton, small, dark, and well defined with strong features and Lennie Small, huge and bearlike, with pale eyes who walks with a heavy gait.  George protects Lennie, who is mentally impaired and obsesses over soft objects.  Though the two farmhands seek work, they dream to  one day own their own farm.

Steinbeck’s powerful portrayal of the relationship between George and Lennie won the 1938 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award and was made into a movie in 1939, and in 1992.

EAST OF EDEN

Author:      John Steinbeck

Published: 1952

Genre:        Classic

Cover:         Paperback

Pages:         467

John Steinbeck based the novel on the philosophy that men choose between good and evil.

The sprawling story centers on three generations of the Trask family.  The story begins with childhood jealousies between two brothers that expand into adulthood.  As the story moves forward, the brothers fall in love with the same woman.

Many twists and turns in the excellently written and plotted classic.  An amazing cast of lifelike characters dominate a fast moving plot that harbors elements of the Biblical story, Cain and Abel.  The classic is noted as one of Steinbecks’ top novels.

Highly Recommended.
