“The Prisoner of Heaven”, is the third installment in the trilogy of suspense novels by Carlos Ruiz Zafon.  Although the three novels are related through characters and incidents, each novel stands independent of the others.

During Christmastime, a stranger enters Sempere and Sons bookshop and buys a rare copy of the book, The Count of Monte Cristo.  Daniel Sempere notices the stranger’s artificial hand as he pays Daniel three times the price of the book and sticks a letter addressed to Fermin de Torres inside the pages.

Fermin realizes his years of hiding are over so reveals his story to Daniel.  In 1939, Fermin de Torres was held prisoner in the Montjuic Castle, among many other innocent men.  Among those men was David Martin, author of “The Angel’s Game”, referred to by his fellow prisoners as, “The Prisoner of Heaven”.  The Governor of the prison, Mauricio Valls, a cruel, corrupt man, demanded an unusual form of punishment from David Martin.

Fermin and Daniel decide to begin their hunt for the man who pursued and found Fermin.

The two intriguing stories move back and forth through time as the mystery of each simultaneously unfolds. Excellent writing matched with skilled dialogue in a suspenseful story hosting a cast of both likeable and nefarious characters.
