Review:

The story of a young girl, who from twelve-years old, grows up in the California Child Welfare System after her mother is sent to prison for murder.  Astrid Magnussen resides with different families over the years, all of which in one way or another either abuse or fail her.

Astrid idealizes her mother until she finds real love from a foster mother who adored her.  As Astrid grows older, certain instances trigger flashbacks of memories from her childhood, events she remembers and begins to question.  After Astride turns to see her mother as a manipulative, selfish woman, she determines to confront her.

Fitch’s beautifully written novel told through descriptive, defined characters, points out the corruption and injustices in the Child Welfare system.
