Review:

“Dogs of War”, by Lisa Rogak, is an informative book detailing the U.S. military service of our canine partners, WMD, Working Military Dogs, as well as their history in the armed forces.

The book discusses the relationship between the handlers and their dogs, and of the dog’s importance in the military unit.  Soldiers explain their feelings of trust and reliance on their dogs as well as the incomparable bond they share with their canine partners.  The book, replete with information about canine senses and canine abilities, explains how dogs compensate their human brothers, fellow soldiers in the field.

The military dogs are geared with equipment from doggles (dog goggles), to body vests for their protection and their jobs range from parachuting from planes to trackers of bad guys, to hunting for IED’s, to hunting for drugs.

The book cites many instances of dog soldiers saving their human partners in arms.  However along with their fellow soldiers, dogs are also wounded or killed in combat.  If wounded, the dogs receive excellent medical care and are medevaced out along with human soldiers.  The Working Military Dogs also receive rewards for their military service.

Citing many different cases of WMD, Working Military Dogs, the book offers, a clear picture of man’s best friend in the military.  After completing their military service, some WMD are available for adoption; if not, the dogs live out their lives in military canine facilities.
