Based on actual events, Lisa Wingate constructs a story of horrific child abuse, kidnapping and illegal adoption promoted by the Tennessee Children’s House Society in the 1930’s.  Using both fact and fiction, the author weaves a tale of two families, one indigent and one, exceeding wealthy.

The author presents the Stafford family, of old money in Tennessee, rich, spoiled, immersed in politics and their self worth.  The extremely poor, Foss family dwells on the river in a rackety boat, yields five children who receive education and who are, warmly loved.

The story, presented through the voices of Avery Stafford, and Rill Foss moves back and forth in time.  The fascinating story of the Ross family flows swiftly.  Avery’s story however, slower paced, is self-indulged, repetitive and left open ended.
