Review:

Ron Rash’s fast paced thriller opens in 1929, as George Pemberton and his new bride, Serena, arrive at the train station in Waynesville, North Carolina.  Anxious for Pemberton’s arrival is Mr. Harmon, who waits at the station, with a bowie knife in his belt, ready to avenge his pregnant daughter, Rachel.

Pemberton recalls his relationship with Rachel Harmon and knows well, her youthful beauty.  Pemberton finds no contest in the struggle with Mr. Harmon.

Pemberton and Serena plot and scheme their way to acquire forested land for their logging business, allowing nothing to deter plans, including murder.  Serena rules the men with an iron fist.  Pemberton becomes wary of her and though ruthless himself, is unaware of all her schemes.

Excellent writing; an intriguing and engaging story full of unexpected twists and turns with well described characters of both good and evil.  Highly recommended.
