In the first novel in the Andy Carpenter series, defense attorney, Andy Carpenter defends an indefensible client accused of committing a heinous murder.  However, after a discovery in his father’s home, Andy comes upon information that will not only possibly help his client, but much more, will change Andy’s life, as he knows it.

Quick witted and fast-paced with believable characters, the story is interesting and entertaining.  However, the novel, outside of a few well placed sentences of Carpenter’s love for his Golden Retriever, Tara, the story has very little to do with Tara.  Although the book in no way resembles Spencer Quinn’s, “Chet and Bernie,” series, nor Bruce Cameron’s “A Dog’s Purpose,” series, Rosenfelt comes across as a genuine dog lover and the few descriptions of Tara are beautifully written, warm and sweet.

Andy Carpenter’s quick wit, believable charm, sarcastic, funny retorts and generous heart make him a likeable defense attorney.  Carpenter defends Laurie Collins, his detective-partner, and love of his life, whom is accused of first degree murder, in this of fast- paced courtroom thriller. The plot, exciting and detailed, contains many twists and turns.

“First Degree,” the second novel in the series, connects to the first, “Open and Shut,” through characters, humor and events.  Tara, Andy’s golden retriever, stars a larger role in this story than in the first novel, and, the story includes an introduction to Cash, a homeless dog.

Rosenfelt nicely intertwines a theme of sensitivity towards animals into the plot.

Outside of outwitting pompous prosecutors, the only thing in life Andy Carpenter loves more than his girlfriend, Laurie Collins, and his golden retriever, Tara, are sports events of any kind.  Rosenfelt ties the Andy Carpenter series together by characters and events, though each book stands independently of another.

Through masterful writing, quick wit, humor, and plots that vary enough to hold interest, Rosenfelt’s, Andy Carpenter series, continues to entertain.   Rosenfelt craftily ties characters from previous novels into the present story expanding their personalities and familiarities.

In the fourth book in the series, Andy Carpenter defends a football player accused of first-degree murder.  Carpenter researches the defense of his client with the usual, often hilarious, dry sense of humor.  Only Andy’s love for Tara, his Golden Retriever, surpasses his love of sports, and of course, his passionate love for Laurie, his girlfriend, who surprisingly, makes a life changing decision.

Although the covers of the book series feature adorable photos of dogs, Tara has little to do with the story other than sporadic mentioning of Andy’s adoration for her.  And yet, bold images of Tara arise, sweet faced and tail wagging.
